How it works
Do I have to create an account?
Yes, and it is not about collecting an address: your groups hold other people’s expenses and balances, and with nobody to recognise there is no way to protect them, nor to guarantee they stay yours when you change phone.
There is no password: a six-digit code by email and you are in. Before deciding you can look at an example group — a real one, read-only, that you delete whenever you like.
Does it work offline?
Yes, completely. The data lives in a database inside the app and the phone does the maths: on a plane, in the mountains or out of data, Tacca behaves identically and just as fast.
This is not a cut-down mode with half the features missing. With no network you add expenses, split them however you like, open a derivation and see up-to-date balances — because those balances do not come from a server, the phone recalculates them every time from the data it already has. That is the situation of a trip abroad with no data, or a mountain hut at 2,000 metres: exactly when a group bill matters most.
When the network comes back, everything lines itself up: what you wrote with no signal leaves stamped with the moment you wrote it, not the moment it left. And if someone else touched the same expense in the meantime, the app tells you instead of silently picking a winner.
How do I get someone into a group?
You show them a QR code. The normal form is per person: the code carries one specific seat, so whoever scans it becomes Giulia and the balances already entered count for them from the first instant — nothing has to be redone by hand.
There is also an open form, for someone joining as a new person. In both cases the code contains no data: the group name and the inviter’s name arrive afterwards, and only for a valid code. It expires after seven days and you can revoke it whenever you want.
Can I use it for an expense between two people?
Yes. Inside Tacca a two-person split is a group like any other, just presented differently: same balances, same derivation, same settle-up.
The usual case is the flatmate you split rent and bills with, or the person you go away with for a weekend. You pay the €84.30 shop, they pay the €61.00 dinner: instead of two debts chasing each other, one number is left — they owe you €11.65 — and tapping it shows which two expenses it comes from.
That is an architectural choice, not a limitation — one code path instead of two means a fix to the balances applies to both cases, always. And the day a third person joins those two, you do not have to redo anything: it was already a group.
What happens to the cent that will not divide?
It gets assigned, and you are told to whom. Splitting € 34.15 four ways would need € 8.5375 each, but cents are whole: three cents are left over and someone has to pay them.
Most apps assign them out of sight and may change their mind on every recalculation. Tacca uses the largest remainder method with a tiebreak that never changes: a thousand recalculations give the same result, and next to the person paying the extra cent it says so.
Can I split an expense in a different currency?
Yes. The expense stays recorded in its own currency and the rate is frozen on the date it happened, with the source and the timestamp written into the derivation.
An example: travelling in London you pay £120.00 for dinner when the rate is 1.17, so €140.40. If sterling moves a month later, that dinner stays €140.40 — and the derivation shows you both the £120.00 and the rate that turned it into euros. The group keeps doing its sums in one currency, the one you chose at the start.
It is the only way a closed bill stays closed: if the rate moves tomorrow, yesterday’s bill does not rewrite itself. An app that recalculates at today’s rate makes you reopen an argument you had already settled.
Data and privacy
Where does my data end up?
On this phone, and on servers in the European Union: your email address and the data of all your groups, not only the shared ones. Syncing is per account, not per group, and there is no switch to keep one out.
Beyond that nothing leaves: no telemetry, no analytics service, no crash reporter sending data elsewhere. What other people can read stays limited to the groups they belong to, and that limit is enforced by the database rules, not by the app.
Do you sell my data or show ads?
No, and the reason you can believe it is not that we write it down: it is that the code to do it does not exist. There is no advertising SDK in the app and no integration with third-party networks.
The revenue model is stated openly and lives on this page: the app is free, and in future you will pay for the cloud receipt archive, which has a real server cost.
If I delete the app, do I lose everything?
If you had not signed up, yes: there is no copy anywhere else, and that is the flip side of nobody being able to read your data.
If you had signed up, no: your groups all come back on first login on the new phone, including the ones you never shared with anyone. It is the other side of syncing per account, and the privacy policy spells it out.
Does Tacca handle payments?
Never. Tacca works out what you owe and to whom, then takes you to your own payment app with the amount already filled in: Satispay, Revolut, PayPal, or an IBAN to copy.
In practice: the group closes, Tacca tells you “you owe Marco €24.50”, you tap the button and your own app opens with that €24.50 already filled in. You pay there, where your money already lives. Then you come back and log the repayment — which is confirmed by whoever receives it, not by whoever says they sent it.
The money never passes through us at any point, we do not hold it and we have no access to your accounts. We are not a payment institution and we perform no service falling under the European payment services directive. It is also why the app can stay free: there is no commission to take a cut of, so there is nothing to withhold.
Who else can see my expenses?
Only the people in the group, and only for groups you chose to share. The restriction is not a rule written in the app: the database enforces it on every single read, by recognising who you are.
The difference is a real one. If the check lived in the app, a hand-written request would be enough to get around it — the app is code running on someone else’s phone, and whoever runs it can change it. Living in the database, the request arrives and finds a closed door: the expenses of a group you are not in are not even refused to you, they simply do not exist as far as you are concerned.
It is also why a stolen invite code opens nothing: without a recognised account, as far as the server is concerned that group simply does not exist. And someone who leaves a group stops seeing its new expenses from the moment they leave, not from the moment they next open the app.
Availability
When does it launch?
There is no date yet, and we would rather not invent one. The app is complete in its main functions and runs on iPhone; what is left before publishing is the boring part — checks, a lawyer reading the legal texts, and store review.
Leave your address in the field at the top of the home page and we write to you the day it launches: we keep it until that email has gone out, and it is good for nothing else. Or write to us, and a person replies.
Will there be an Android version?
Yes. It will not be a port: the Android interface is written separately with its own materials, its own dynamic colour and its own gestures, because an iOS app in disguise gives itself away on the first tap.
The logic — calculation engine, database, syncing — is identical, so the numbers match to the cent on both systems.
Which languages is it translated into?
Italian, English, French and Spanish, all four complete: interface, explanations, legal documents, category names, the words of the derivation, error messages, and number and date formatting.
That is not a detail of the text: 12.50 means one thousand two hundred and fifty in Italian and twelve and a half in English, and in French the thousands separator is a space. A partial translation is not a state we allow.
How much will it cost?
The app stays free, with no daily limits and no locked features. That includes splitting a photographed receipt line by line, which is the thing that makes Tacca different.
Only what carries a real recurring cost will be paid: the cloud receipt archive, full-text search across it, and email forwarding of digital receipts. The price is not decided yet.
